“Kingdom of Heaven” and the “Gates of Hell”
We left Marrakech with a heavy burden for the people there, and decided to travel west toward the coast. Situated along the Atlantic Ocean, the city of Essaourira has a charming feel to it that draws visitors from all over the world. It has such an ancient Arabic look to it that you feel like you are stepping back in time as soon as you step foot in the central plaza.
A few years ago Essaourira was use as part of the set for the movie “Kingdom of Heaven.” It was a good title for the movie, but it was also obvious, as I walked through the city, that no Moroccan living there knew anything about the true kindom of heaven. With giant minuretts overlooking the old medina and fortified walls towering over everyone who entered into the city, the ancient fortress reminded me of how strong of a hold Satan has in that area of the world.
50,000 people live in Essaourira and not a single church of any sort can be found. We didn’t stay there long simply because we did not have any contacts to help us get around. The people live in darkness, condemned already.
I was reminded of the promise that Jesus gave His church in Matthew 16:18 that “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” We have the promise of victory in places like Essaourira, but who is claiming it there? God is looking for someone to stand up and have compassion making a difference in the lives of these people by pulling them out of the fire.
Who will preach the kingdom of heaven beyond the gates of hell?
